"How can he love me," she mused aloud, staring at the concave mirror in her palm. "How could he possibly love me?"

He shaved with his eyes closed, relishing the whisper of death across his cheeks, the occasional teasing nick.

Traffic inched forwards.

"My god. My god, that's a lot of blood. Oh god."

His hands knew better than to react to the honk; opening his eyes, he moved forwards a half-length and looked around. Glass glittered on the street. Plastic parts told a story of destruction. There, on the left.

Traffic inched forwards.

"Oh my god, that poor puppy. My god, that's so sad." With a learned motion, she placed the compact back in her purse. Her vision blurred, trying to watch both the road and the accident.

The cars slowly spread apart, finding their natural speeds.

She focused her attention on the road, living every moment; she could feel the wreck happening in her stomach, imagine her reaction; imagine turning over, rolling, crushing. She focused her attention on the road.

Another honk and he told himself to give up his dreaming. He accelerated gently into the flow and looked around. A smile crept across his face as his eyes caught the driver next to him.

She smiled back.
