Shella slumbered through contagion; spooned against the memory of her brother, a worn and dirty rabbit. The scientists were right--the spores only fed on active consciousness. Ten thousand or ten million, it was hard to say how many died or how many lived. Bomb shelters were ready and readied; nations worked together to irradiate the surface. Computers froze humanity, and the world slumbered; spooned against the earth's core, waiting for rebirth.
